What We Thought:
I probably hadn’t seen My Best Friend Is a Vampire in 30 years. It’s one of those late 1980s horror teen flicks that was just good enough to be popular at the time, but never ended up as a cult classic. I’m sure it has a ton of fans who will eat up this Vestron release, but it won’t be confused for The Lost Boys.
What I love about watching these movies is what they got away with in a PG movie back then. The lead and his best friend talk about getting laid. There isn’t any nudity or full blown sex scenes, but it’s surprising how far they pushed the envelope. Same for the language and content. It’s not full of f-bombs or gore, but they definitely did as much as they could with their rating.
If you aren’t familiar with the movie, a high school boy is bitten by a female vampire after meeting her when he delivers groceries to her home. She’s new in town and tells the boy to come over later that night. With the help of his friend, he shows up at night, gets bitten, but two vampire hunters show up. The rest of the movie is about them trying to hunt down vampires and the lead trying to cope with his new life. Plus a love interest.
It’s all very 80s from the wardrobe to the music to the slang. I was kind of confused at how the friend could drive a car when both him and the lead were taking driving lessons still, but I’m probably putting way too much thought into an 80s teen vamp film.
It had been so long since I seen the film I forgot Kathy Bates played the love interest’s mother. Rene Auberjonois is also in the movie as a sort of mentor to the new vampire.
My Best Friend Is a Vampire is very 80s and still holds up pretty well. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane and always enjoy watching movies where kids (even teens) get to act like normal teens. The Lost Boys is a thousand times better, but if you have a soft spot for this genre (especially 1980s films), you’ll enjoy this new Blu-ray package.
