Synopsis:
In April 1980, six armed gunmen stormed the Iranian Embassy in Princes Gate, London, taking 26 people hostage. Over the next six days a tense standoff took place. All the while, a group of highly trained soldiers prepared for a raid.
What We Thought:
6 Days is a story I wasn’t familiar with. I’m an American so maybe that’s why I didn’t know about this hostage situation in England in 1980. It feels like other movies we’ve seen before, but it has a solid cast and interesting story.
Mark Strong is the man on the phone dealing with the gunmen. There is a cop on the inside as well who talks with Strong to help with the gunmen. Jamie Bell plays a soldier who is part of the unit that eventually raids the hostage situation.
Looking back, it’s amazing how many stories like this are out there. We think of 9/11 as a game changer, and it was, but there are situations like what takes place in 6 Days, the Iran hostage crisis and other events that happened that we seem to ignore/forget.
The movie is interesting enough, but I’m not sure if it’s something I’d watch again. There’s nothing exactly wrong with it, but other than an event I wasn’t aware of, it doesn’t really bring anything new to the table. It’s perfectly fine, direction is fine, the acting is solid, but it won’t exactly “wow” anyone either.
I can’t call 6 Days generic because it’s not. It’s just not exciting or groundbreaking. It feels like most hostage films and doesn’t try anything new. It’s still pretty decent and worth a watch especially if you like the cast.
