Synopsis:
From the Oscar winning producers of Amy comes this essential and entertaining look at the meteoric rise of the seminal 90s rock band Oasis. The film immerses us in the raucous rock stars’ fast-paced world of electrifying music, wild debauchery, and epic fraternal feuding, weaving never-before-seen concert footage with candid interviews and an astonishing firsthand account of the backstage sibling rivalry that threatened to destroy the band.
What We Thought:
I was never a diehard fan of Oasis, but I liked a lot of their hits. Watching Oasis: Supersonic, I realized just how big they were at one point in the 1990’s. For a brief period of time, they were one of the biggest bands in the world.
The documentary uses old photos, interviews, videos and the like to tell the story of the Gallagher brothers, their early bands, the formation of Oasis and their rise to fame. It’s an intimate look at their family life and how they both got interested in music.
Then it gets into Oasis growing big in England. They got signed, released their first album which became a hit in England. They went to Japan where the Japanese crowds loved them. They finally made it to the States where no one here knew who they were. That was until their second album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? made them huge.
The footage of them playing in Los Angeles early on was great. They did meth thinking it was coke and their performance was all over the place. Noel Gallagher leaves for a while where he would go on and write a hit song while on hiatus.
The documentary isn’t shy about their booze, drugs and fighting lifestyle. They talk about drinking, getting high and fighting one another. It was pretty much what they were known for.
The film opens and closes with concert footage of them playing to one of the biggest crowds in rock history. It was pretty amazing to see how big they got then. What I also loved was seeing this crowd of people in the 1990’s with not one cellphone in anyone’s hands because no one had one! No one was blocking your view trying to record the show. No one was looking at their phone instead of what was actually happening. Man I miss the 1990’s.
Oasis: Supersonic made me listen to a bunch of their music afterwards. Even if you aren’t a fan, you should like it. It’s extremely well made and very intimate. It humanizes Liam and Noel and you see why they were how they were. If you are a fan, you have to see it. Very cool rock doc.
