What We Thought:

Charlie’s Angels was iconic television. It became a pop culture phenomenon that to this day still gets referenced. Farrah Fawcett’s legendary poster hung on the wall of many teens or in the garages of many men.

It seems simple today, get a couple of hot women, make them fight crime and you have a hit show, but back then, it was unheard of. Plus they made the show so entertaining and good that it was nominated for Golden Globes and Emmy Awards. People might only remember it for its pop culture lore, but the show was well received and respected.

It made huge stars of Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett-Majors, Jaclyn Smith, Cheryl Ladd and the other Angels who came in as the first stars left. It also left a lasting mark on its viewers because the show highly influenced people like Drew Barrymore. She helped make the movie version decades later and they tried to reboot the show a few years ago, but it lacked charm and wit.

Watching it now, it is a bit corny by today’s standards, but you have to keep it all in perspective. This was years before Knight Rider, another show that had a mysterious voice and leader that told you what crimes you were fighting that week. This was years before Cagney & Lacey, a show that featured women solving crime. This was a decade before the even cornier Baywatch.

Charlie’s Angels will go down as a game changing TV show. It doesn’t quite hold up today, but it was fun, entertaining, genre changing and a lot more. The Angels always had the coolest clothes and nicest hair which shaped fashion and trends. They had gadgets and kicked butt in a time you didn’t see women doing that on TV. Forty years later it’s still a show that people can watch and have fun with. Forty years later it’s still legendary.
