We here at The Nerds Templar get a lot of random movies sent our way whether online or on DVD. We like to group some together and this batch includes two VOD films and a DVD all being released this month.
Up first we have Bachelors. This is hitting VOD August 16th across all digital platforms. The film is ok, but it’s something we’ve seen done many times before. A serial bachelor is more interested in his next score than he is settling down despite his friends having families. His best friend is getting married soon and he’s trying to convince him to call it off. He meets a woman who’s different than all the others, but she gets a job offer elsewhere and he doesn’t tell her to stay. But at the end does he feel different? I didn’t feel any different at the end. I’ve definitely seen the movie before and I don’t think I’d watch this one again. The most interesting thing about the film is its cast. It’s so bizarre! Colin Egglesfield plays the bachelor and I know I’ve seen him in other things, but nothing screams out to me. If you squint you might think he’s Robbie Amell. Fred Willard is in it as a walking woman getter. Chris Owen who played Sherman in the American Pie films is in it. David Faustino, TV’s Bud Bundy, plays a former high school hockey star even though he’s like 5’6. But the one who felt the most out of place was Brian White. I’m a big fan of his and have no idea why he was in it and playing a professional hockey player. The film is completely unoriginal and stereotypical. I don’t know if I chuckled more than a few times. It’s not horrible or anything, it’s just been done before.
Next we have Hell Town. This horror comedy is hitting cable VOD and digital HD on August 23rd. I kind of liked it, but also kind of thought it was dumb. It’s a spoof of television teen dramas with a serial killer going around killing high school students. It’s a movie that they made to look like a TV show, but you only see a couple of episodes because the others were lost or something like that. I didn’t really see the point of going through all that to be honest. It has a ton of characters, all typical of teen dramas, the football stars, the hottie, the smart girl, the outcasts, the rich ones, etc. You find out who the killer is and why they do it towards the end of the last “episode”, but I don’t know if I really cared enough by then. I think I’d rather just a straight forward movie with all these characters than the TV episode idea. I liked some of the characters, but I guess I didn’t see the point of the concept. I can see people liking it though.
Last we have The House on Cuckoo Lane. This one hits DVD August 16th. This is another one I didn’t understand. At first I thought it was going to be like The Ring where people watch a video they shouldn’t or maybe like VHS or an anthology film, but it’s not quite any of those. It’s about a mysterious snuff film that finds its way into the hands of horror film collectors. Is it real or fiction? I’m too analytical or something because stuff like this and found footage type films do nothing for me. The viewer knows this movie is fake and what’s happening in it is fake so what’s the point? It’s kind of weird so I’ll give it credit for trying to be original, but honestly, I guess I didn’t get it at all.
