Synopsis:
John Travolta is Stanley Hill, a former Black Ops agent who witnessed his wife’s death at the hands of a street gang. When corrupt cops let the prime suspect walk, Stanley takes the law into his own hands. Joined by a former comrade-in-arms (Christopher Meloni), Stanley uncovers a conspiracy that leads to the upper ranks of government, as he heads toward a guns-blazing, take-no-prisoners showdown for justice.
What We Thought:
I Am Wrath is surprisingly good. It’s one of John Travolta’s better films in a long time.
It’s your classic revenge action flick. Travolta’s wife is killed in front of him, but corrupt cops and officials won’t do much about it. Travolta’s past comes out and he seeks revenge on the killers. Along the way, former partner Chris Meloni joins him and the reason behind the killing becomes clear.
It’s not as action oriented as another revenge film John Wick, but there is some good action in it. Some believable action too. You may not automatically think “action star” when you think of Travolta today, but he handles it well here. His character is an older, “out of the game” type so that’s what makes his performance believable.
Although Chris Meloni is an absolute scene stealer in this. I thought his character was great and he was great. He plays off of Travolta really well and plays a good “retired” agent who can’t fully leave the life behind like Travolta did.
I think the chemistry between them made me enjoy the film. Meloni seemed to be having a blast with his character and Travolta gives his most believable performance in years. Most lesser known action films have their leads mailing in their acting performances, but both seemed to genuinely care enough to try.
The film is written by Paul Sloan who also plays the bad guy in it. He wrote another recent film I liked Vigilante Diaries and I’d like to see him write more films. He’s 2 for 2 with the movies I’ve seen.
The Blu-ray looks really good. Colors pop. The action looks bright and clean. Audio has full, easy to hear dialogue and good sound effects. It comes with commentary from the director and writer.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from I Am Wrath before I watched it. I like a lot of action movies that get more of a straight-to-video or video on demand release like this, but I haven’t liked too many of Travolta’s films the past few years. I liked the movie though, especially Meloni. If you liked Vigilante Diaries or other smaller released action films, you should like this too. Because of all that, it is…
