What We Thought:
Finding Dory is a nice family film that your kids will adore. If they liked the first one, Finding Nemo, they will definitely like this.
Unlike other people, I’m not a Disney/Pixar diehard. I like a lot of their films, but I think a lot are overrated especially for adult audiences. I had never seen Finding Nemo till two weeks and finally watched it because I figured I should see it before the sequel.
The sequel is pretty much the same premise as the first. Instead of Marlin and Dory trying to find and rescue Nemo, it’s Dory that Marlin and Nemo are trying to find. Dory is searching for her parents and finds herself at an aquarium where she grew up at.
To me, it’s definitely more a film for kids than adults. I know many people will disagree with me and the guy next to me crying his eyes out would definitely disagree with me. These films don’t hit me like they do other adults. I can see why adults like Toy Story, The Incredibles or Up, but I don’t get the draw to other Pixar films as a grown up.
I saw it in IMAX 3D and it looked flawless. The size and colors and sound and all of it was just perfect. I’m not a 3D fan overall, but animation does look good in 3D. The water, the colors of the fish, the aquarium all looked breathtaking. Kids and adults will be wowed by the world that is created for the big screen.
I can also admit that I did laugh at the film. There’s a truck scene that made me genuinely laugh out loud. I like the turtles that also showed up in the first one, but the breakout characters in this one are the sea lions (or seals, I can’t tell them apart). The bird is also pretty fantastic. Speaking of birds, make sure you get to the theater on time because the short before it, Piper, is really, really good.
Maybe I’m a soulless monster, I don’t know, but I don’t get emotional watching these movies. The guy next to me was literally wiping tears off his cheeks while I just sat there. I get why kids go crazy over the film, but adults? Not for this one.
But none of that matters. Finding Dory will be the number one film at the box office this weekend and will make a boatload of money in general (pun intended). It will be a movie your kids watch over and over again. There will be a slew of adults who love it too. It will get nominated for a Best Animated Feature Academy Award as well. I liked it, but I’m not one that goes crazy over these films. Still for the kids and for the fans, it is…
