Synopsis:
Director James Wan brings this supernatural thriller to the screen with another real case from the files of renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. Reprising their roles, Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson star as Lorraine and Ed Warren, who, in one of their most terrifying paranormal investigations, travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits.
What We Thought:
The Conjuring was a pretty decent film. I’m not a big fan of today’s “horror” films with cheap jump scares and ghosts moving stuff. I prefer old fashioned slashers, but we don’t get many of them today. The Conjuring 2 on the other hand was pretty disappointing.
My biggest issue with the film is how slow it is. It starts out with Lorraine and Ed talking about the Amityville house. Well there’s been plenty of Amityville films already, I don’t need to hear about it yet again.
The story in the film is about a family in England having a similar haunting problem like Amityville and the story in the first film. But it takes like a half hour for Ed and Lorraine to even make it to England.
By the time they get there and realize it’s not a hoax, I had already checked out. I lost interest and just didn’t care at that point. It lost my attention by the time it got interesting.
That’s the worst part, towards the end it finally got good. There’s a creepy old dead guy and an even creepier nun, but by then it was too little too late for me.
I don’t get scared at any of these paranormal films. I don’t believe in ghosts or paranormal activity so if your movie is slow and taking forever for anything to happen, I’m not going to like it. A door opening or a blanket being moved simply isn’t scary to me and I loathe seeing these films with an audience overreacting and talking back towards the screen.
The acting is perfectly fine though. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are two of my favorite actors going and you can never go wrong with Maria Doyle Kennedy even in a small role. Production value is good too. I’m not a fan of this “horror”, but it looks good and has some cool effects.
I was disappointed in The Conjuring 2 and I wasn’t the only one who was either. It’s very slow and way too long. If it cut 15-20 minutes off especially the Amityville stuff, it might have been better. I still think fans of the first one and paranormal fans will like it though.
