This week I have a batch of horror DVDs to talk about. Some have been out for a while, a couple are relatively new. First we have Bigfoot vs. Zombies. If the name alone doesn’t make you want to watch the film, well clearly the film isn’t for you. It’s a very low budget D-list film (as are all the films in this batch), but I won’t hold it against it too much. Because of the budget, it’s pretty laughable, but in an entertaining way. The zombies look like people used make up you buy at Walgreens around Halloween with masks you buy at Spencer’s Gifts. The Bigfoot is clearly an over the counter Bigfoot costume you can buy at any cheap costume store as well. The special effects are definitely special. The post-production added muzzle flashes, the flames on the Jeep when it’s on fire, blood hitting the camera, are all comically special. Add in the fact that none of these people really know how to act and well, you get a bad movie that’s entertaining. Not everyone will find the enjoyment in this type of film, but I did. There’s a time and a place for movies like this, I had the time and the place to watch it and I’ve been talking to a friend about it since. If you like low value, home made looking horror, this is for you.
Next we have Ebola Zombies. The movie is your pretty standard generic zombie film. Once the outbreak slowly starts in the building, people start turning into zombies and then all hell breaks loose. But I will give it two big originality points. Yup, TWO! First of all, I think it’s the first Asian horror film I’ve ever seen. I know there are movies from Asia like The Ring and The Grudge, but to me that’s not horror. Ghosts and jump scares is horror by today’s standards, but it’s not to me. I prefer slashers, blood and gore. I don’t remember ever seeing a zombie film come from Asia before so I’ll give it credit for that. I also give it credit because I’ve never seen martial arts used to fight zombies before. Well at least not as much as this movie. There are martial artists in this film that at first fight each other and then later on kick, punch and use weapons to fight the zombies. Sure they use guns too, but I liked seeing something different. Other than that is pretty basic, but if you are diehard zombie junkie, I recommend it.
Third we have Jurassic Prey. This is from the same group that gave us Bigfoot vs. Zombies. I was actually disappointed in this one because I at least found BvZ entertaining. My biggest issue with this one is that it takes FOREVER for the dinosaur to really interact with anyone. There’s random killings, but overall the movie is more a robbery/kidnapping film than creature feature. Just like in BvZ, the actors aren’t very good and the production is low so for 75% of the movie, it’s them acting along with the robbery/hide out story. The ending is great though and I wish the entire film was that way. Once the dino comes into play and starts killing people, it’s laughably good. The dinosaur looks horrendous, but that’s part of the entertainment value. One guy fights him on a wooden dock and for some reason the dock doesn’t get crushed under the dinosaur’s weight. If the rampaging ending was more than 25 of the movie, I would have liked it a lot. Unfortunately there’s too much story for it be “so bad it’s good”.
Last we have Raiders of the Lost Shark. I’m a sucker for CGI shark films. Sure most people have seen Sharknado, but I’ve seen Shark Lake, Three Headed Shark Attack, Sharktopus, etc. I think my soft spot for these films let me enjoy this way more than I should have. It’s pretty bad, but anytime a CGI shark jumps out of the water and eats someone, I’m gonna watch it. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the plot of this in EVERY other shark movie, but hey I sat there entertained. It’s low budget, looks campy and funny and the acting is bad, but, if like me, you like these movies, you’ll have fun with this one. There’s hot chicks, a CGI shark, blood and some good kills. What more do you need/want?
